Chapter 12
Somehow, I got through the rest of the interview, thanked Andy politely, and headed down the stairs with firm, steady steps. I crossed the street, then sank down onto the grass of the park and stared at my notepad, trying to make sense of any of it.
Why did Andy think that Paula and Glenn were a couple? Had Glenn really hinted at such a thing, or was Andy just claiming that to throw suspicion on Glenn?
I studied the silhouettes of the Victorian houses in the dimming evening light. Usually, such a view would send exhilaration zipping through my core, but today, I just felt tired. The second trimester of pregnancy was supposed to energize you, right? Maybe it was different with twins. Or maybe the case was getting to me.
My confidence in Paula was absolute, but I didnât like the way the case was shaping up. No wonder the police had been so suspicious of her. If I didnât know Paula personally, Iâd sure as heck have her toward the top of my list. Right underneath Andy and Glenn.
âHey!â called a male voice from across the street. I looked to see Andyâs neighbor, Zach, waving at me from his front steps. He still wore the gardening gloves and dirty white T-shirt, but at least heâd set down the spade and plant this time. I waved back, and he headed down the steps and strode toward me.
Huh. This could be interesting. I flipped to a fresh page in my notepad just as he reached me.
âMind if we talk a minute?â he asked.
âOf course,â I said. âI was actually hoping to get a chance to ask you a few questions at some point.â
âOh?â he asked, seeming surprised. âWhyâs that?â
âWell, you live next door,â I replied. âSo, especially since youâre Andyâs friend, I was wondering if youâd noticed anything out of the ordinary.â
He glanced back up toward the houses and hissed through his teeth. âSure is a shame about Carrie. She seemed like a sweet person. Or would have been if it werenât for her tool of a husband.â
âGo on,â I said, already jotting down notes. âI didnât realize you knew Carrie.â
âAndy brought me in to help in a couple mediation meetings early on in the negotiations, so I interacted with her and her husband a handful of times.â He cracked his neck. âI . . . feel a little guilty, actually, because I wasnât really surprised to hear she was dead.â
Oh? âAnd whyâs that?â
He grimaced and shuffled his sneaker toe against the grass. âI was a little worried about her, to tell you the truth. She showed up to the first meeting with a bruise on her upper arm. I noticed it but didnât ask any questions. Itâd be weird for me to pry too much about something like that, you know? But the second meeting, it looked like she had a black eye that sheâd tried to cover up with a lot of makeup. I did pull her aside and ask her about it, but she claimed it wasnât anythingâthat sheâd bruised herself being clumsy.
